Chest Wall Trauma
Brief Description: Patients with chest wall trauma/injury require adequate levels of analgesia, early mobilization, and aggressive pulmonary hygiene to decrease length of stay, morbidity,
mortality, and respiratory complications.
Recognizing the level of care requirements (Medical/Surgical, PCU, or SICU) is the first step in treatment.
Patients not meeting Incentive Spirometry (IS) requirements are at risk to develop atelectasis or increase in supplemental oxygen requirements. Providers should consider ordering non-vibratory PEP treatments every 4h while awake.
