Clinical Practice Guideline Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), Hyperglycemic Hyperosmolar States (HHS), and Euglycemic Diabetic Ketoacidosis (EuDKA) Management
Brief Description: Identify patients with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar states (HHS) based on physical and laboratory findings. Attempt to determine precipitating cause (infection, insulin deficiency, medication induced, trauma) and treat.
Provide appropriate hydration/ correction of electrolyte derangements.
Provide appropriate medications to restore intravascular volume, prevent and correct electrolyte abnormalities and correct acidosis.
Blood glucose control should be based on hourly assessment.
Establish protocol for frequent monitoring and assessment of the response to treatments; such as mental status, volume status, and resolution of laboratory abnormalities.
