Clinical Practice Guideline: Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), Hyperglycemic Hyperosmolar States (HHS), and Euglycemic Diabetic Ketoacidosis (EuDKA)
Brief Description:
- Identify patients with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar states (HHS) based on physical and laboratory findings
- Attempt to determine precipitating cause (infection, insulin deficiency, medication induced, trauma) and treat Correct Dehydration
- Provide appropriate hydration/ correction of electrolyte derangements Correct Ketoacidosis
- Provide appropriate medications to restore intravascular volume, prevent and correct electrolyte abnormalities, and correct acidosis Control Blood Glucose
- Blood glucose control should be based on hourly assessment Avoid Complications
- Establish protocol for frequent monitoring and assessment of the response to treatments; such as mental status, volume status, and resolution of laboratory abnormalities
