Brief Description: A Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infection (CLABSI) represents a surveillance term used to describe a patient with a central line in place, who has a laboratory-confirmed bloodstream infection (BSI) that is not related to an infection of another site. CLABSIs result in thousands of deaths each year and billions of dollars in added costs to the U.S. health care system. This guideline focuses on prevention of CLABSIs in patients with central venous catheters in place.
